Welcome to the Aln Valley Railway

It’s full steam ahead! - we have been given planning permission to begin to re-establish the Alnwick to Alnmouth line.

At a meeting on 01 Jul 10, the Northumberland County Council’s North Area planning committee voted unanimously to approve the scheme, as recommended by officers.

AVR Trust spokesman Roger Jermy said: “Needless to say, after almost 15 years of work and preparation, the committee and members of the trust and society are both delighted and relieved that the planning application was approved.” The official press release can be found here.

With an ultimate aim of joining coast to castle, the Aln Valley Railway is to be built along the disused trackbed that runs from Alnmouth station to Alnwick. There are several obstacles that have worked against us since the launch of the project, but we are now getting under way.

We have designed our new station which is to be built at the Lionheart Business Park in Alnwick, and we’re planning our track laying and preparing our rolling stock at our Longhoughton and Wooler sites.

A big thankyou to all those who have supported us this far. There is still much to do before we are running trains, but a massive hurdle has now been overcome.

If you would like to help, please contact one of the committee members, and/or apply for membership.
